Slide WHEN LIVING
BECOMES ART

FIRST FOR BELGIUM

Award-winning architect Shigeru Ban, wood artist and master of the use of renewable materials, is showcasing his exceptional talents at Nieuw Zuid. A first, because the Japanese architect is designing in Belgium for the first time. It is a major new addition to an urban development making a name for itself as an architectural site.

A NEW LANDMARK FOR ANTWERP

With BAN, the architect designed an eye-catching building on the edge of Nieuw Zuid’s sprawling park. The project comprises a residential tower with lower extension and a detached building of the same height around a large and peaceful courtyard. The zinc roofing of the duplex residential pavilions hints at the archetypal Japanese building style and, together with Ban’s signature latticework in the facades and terraces, is a subtle reference to the land of the rising sun.

LIVING CONNECTED WITH NATURE

BAN is being built on the edge of Nieuw Zuid’s sprawling park. An impressive work of art that rises above the site, so the higher tower floors also enjoy views of the Scheldt and city. Connection between people, building and environment is essential for the architect. That philosophy comes to life in the warm wooden facade work and the layout that can be adapted to the residents’ wishes.

THE ART OF SUSTAINABILITY

The wood used for the facades serves more than just an aesthetic purpose. Shigeru Ban has a penchant for sustainable materials and is known for wanting to minimise the ecological footprint with his architecture. By opting for a hybrid structure of concrete, steel and pre-finished and hard-wearing European timbers, BAN maintains the optimal balance between structural engineering ingenuity, long-term solidity and durability.

“I like to play with the continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces. In the design of BAN, I did exactly that. By providing as much terrace space as possible, I try to draw outdoor space into all flats and houses, and vice versa.”
